About Me

I’m Cloe, a writer based in South Yorkshire.

By day, I work in software testing, which probably explains my fondness for patterns, questions, evidence and people who cannot leave things alone. I’m interested in the private logic behind the things people do — particularly when something completely reasonable starts becoming slightly less reasonable without them noticing.

That tends to find its way into my writing.

My current novel, ASK ABOUT THE SECOND ONE, follows a psychology student whose concern for a missing coursemate develops into an investigation she can rationalise long after she knows he is safe. It explores OCD, responsibility and the exhausting pursuit of certainty.

I’ve also written FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES, LIFE FELT PERFECT, a memoir about growing up Mormon, teenage relationships, family, shame, humour, and discovering that adulthood looks very little like the version you planned when you were thirteen.

Away from my laptop, I’m happiest reading, walking my dogs, being somewhere outdoors, or rewatching television programmes I have already seen enough times to know exactly what happens. Peep Show is currently winning that particular competition.

I’m also British enough to believe most activities are improved by the presence of a cup of tea. Reading? Tea. Writing? Tea. Sitting outside doing absolutely nothing? Ideal tea conditions.

I started the year learning how to tattoo in an attempt to quieten my brain, and I’ll be ending it having written two books. Apparently, I’m not very good at doing things by halves. If you need a subpar tattoo, though, give me a shout. It will be bad.

This is Rainn. She's my soul dog. No further explanation needed.

"I’ve always been interested in the gap between what people say, what they do, and what they’re thinking."
